To Pen Name or Not?

One of the things I kick around is whether I should write some of my books under a pen name.  The dilemma is that I don’t stick with one genre, so maybe I should write under a couple of different names.  One Night in Bridgeport is a legal thriller.  One of the WIP – Terror in a Small Town — I hope to finish in the next year is a terrorist thriller.  Those two go together.  Weed Therapy is a slow-paced, introspective journey.  One of the WIP – The Irrepairable Past — I hope to finish in the next year is a slow-paced, introspective journey.  Those two go together.  But they don’t go with Bridgeport and Terror.

Writing in the same genre bores me.  The opportunity to take a stab at different types of stories, as well as different ways to tell stories, is one of the things that keeps motivating me to write.  It’s what keeps writing fresh and new.  Like I told a new friend earlier this week, I compare it to cooking, which has also held my interest for a long time.  With both, there is always something new to try.  A never-ending string of recipes and types of food to make and a never-ending stream of stories to try.

I recently started my first, real horror story.  We’ll see how it goes.  I’m still working on Northville Five & Dime.  I’m not even sure how to characterize that.  It’s an odd kind of thriller bent around a slow-paced, introspective journey for three different characters.  Maybe it’s a genre-buster!

Some readers who enjoy Bridgeport may be turned off by Weed Therapy and vice versa.  If my horror story goes anywhere, I’m pretty certain it would not be appealing to the readers of The Irrepairable Past.  I’m not one of those types of readers though.  I don’t get people who stick in the same genre or two.  It’s one of the things that I’ve enjoyed about the self-publishing explosion and my commitment to it over the past year.  I’ve read stories I never would have read before and that is a good thing.  But even before self-publishing took off, I was a reader of great variety.  Science fiction, fantasy, spy thrillers, legal thrillers, non-fiction (history, current events, biographies), the catch-all mainstream fiction, and anything and everything in between.  I read.  That’s what I do.  Words on a page and I’m there.

If you look at most well-known, successful authors, they are firmly planted in a genre.  People know exactly what they’re going to get from a King, Patterson, Koontz, Steele, Sparks, etc., and those readers want that certainty.  The one exception that I can think of is Grisham, who has found success outside of his original genre and kudos to him for that.

The question is whether I cater to genre specific readers or to people like me.  Should I be concerned about a reader who likes Bridgeport being turned off by The Irrepairable Past and not lead them to it by using a pen name for one or the other?  Or should I not care and imagine a world where more readers are like me than not?

Should Mark Paxson be a writer of slow-paced, introspective stories and John Doe go after the thriller/horror market?  My preference is that Mark Paxson is the name behind all of it because this is who I am, but I wonder whether this is a mistake I could be making as I continue down this path.  And then, there’s the whole question of what to do when I get around to finishing my set of three erotic novellas.  Ugh!

Father Santos’s Lessons

With the publication of Weed Therapy I begin something I have never tried before.  It’s fiction, but with a message.  There’s no denying that the story derives from personal experience.  But my hope is that my personal experience as it translates into the story that became Weed Therapy creates the opportunity for a larger conversation, an opportunity for my readers to recognize that there is a better way, a means to better, deeper relationships.

As I count them there are a dozen or so lessons that Father Santos imparts on Kelvin Rockwell in Weed Therapy.  Over the next few months, I’ll be posting a further exploration of those lessons and, hopefully, creating a conversation about the ideas.  The posts will originate at my blog, but I will link to them here.  I invite you to share your thoughts.  Your own personal experiences that relate to the ideas.  Where I may have got it wrong.  Or right.  Or somewhere in between.

Weed Therapy is Coming

I hesitate to make promises of actual dates, but novel #2, Weed Therapy, is on its way.  The cover is complete.  Final editing is this close.  It could be up and available on Kindle in a matter of days and available in paperback within the next week or two.

More details to come.  I have some ideas about making this more than just a book publication.  It may result in a significant expansion of some ideas I want to blog about.  Maybe it can be the impetus for an on-line, blogosphere kind of dialogue between you and me.

Authorgraph

I heard about this website from Carrie Rubin.  At the time, I wasn’t too interested in it because Bridgeport wasn’t selling too many copies.  Now that I’ve cracked the nut and have sold almost 200 copies this week, as well as the 5,900 free downloads, I think it’s a wonderful idea.

Authorgraph allows readers to obtain autographs from authors for their books on Kindle.  So, there you go.  You want an autograph for your Kindle version of Bridgeport, go there, sign in and make the request.  I believe there is a very small fee that Kindle will charge you, (like pennies, I think) but I have no control over that.

#1

With 5,119 free downloads under my belt, One Night in Bridgeport has achieved #1 status in the Free Legal Thriller category and is at #64 in all Free Kindle downloads.  And, I’ve sold a couple more of my other books in the last 24 hours as well.

I don’t make any money directly off the free downloads but the knowledge that that many people will soon be reading my book is pretty daunting.  It’s what all writers strive for and now I have to worry about what they’ll think about this first foray.  It was the first significant piece of fiction I ever wrote.  Through two major re-writes and a couple more major edits, it’s now in a lot of people’s hands.  Horrors!!!

If you’re one of my new readers, let me know what you think.  Good, bad or indifferent.

Bridgeport for Free Update

As the day winds down to a close, I offer this update.  At 5:30 p.m., 1,829 people have downloaded a free copy of One Night in Bridgeport for their Kindle.  That leaves me at #159 on the Kindle Free list and #2 on the Free Legal Thriller list.  Question is … what will offering this for free to so many readers do for me.

Well, in the last week, since my Goodreads giveaway and now this, I’ve managed to sell a hard copy of Bridgeport, three Shady Acres downloads, and three Bridgeport downloads.  So, for offering free stuff, I’ve made a few dollars.  Hopefully, the free downloaders will post reviews, recommend it to friends, do the things it takes to grow sales.

If you’re one of the free readers, thank you for your interest.  Spread the word.

Yet Another Bridgeport Option

For the next three months, the e-download version of One Night in Bridgeport will be available exclusively via KDP Select.  This is the Kindle e-publishing platform.  Going exclusive on KDP Select means a couple of things.  First, I have five days in which I can offer it free.  The first day of free is tomorrow.  Second, people who are Amazon Prime members can “borrow” the book through the Kindle Lending Library.  You don’t pay anything when you borrow a book via KLL, but you can only borrow one book at a time.  And, although, you don’t pay for the book, Amazon sets aside a pot of money that is divvied up among authors based on how many times their book is borrowed each month.  The amount paid per borrowing is comparable to the royalty I would receive if the reader purchased the book.

So, if you’re an Amazon Prime member, borrow away!!!

Free Bridgeport

No, not as in free the town.  Instead, via Kindle Direct Publishing, January 27 and 28, get One Night in Bridgeport for your Kindle free.  Yes, that’s right, absolutely, positively, 100% free.  Just go to Amazon and purchase.  Which is really kind of odd, how do you purchase something that’s free?  I don’t know, just do it, and post a review.
